Edwards Statement On Romney Trade Proposal

Des Moines, Iowa – Senator John Edwards released the following statement about the trade proposal Governor Mitt Romney announced today.

"Just like President Bush's failed trade agenda, Governor Romney's trade proposal would cost more American jobs and move our country in exactly the wrong direction. Governor Romney's proposal, which includes support of the Peru Agreement and a 'Reagan Zone,' would continue more than a decade of trade agreements that put the interests of big multinational corporations above the interests of America's workers. After years of trade agreements like NAFTA that have devastated communities across the country, like Newton, Iowa and my hometown of Robbins, North Carolina, we need a new direction.

"As president, I will put the needs of hard-working families in Iowa and across the country first. The primary question I will ask before signing any new trade deal will be simple: considering its impact on jobs, wages and prices, will most workers be better off? With smart trade policies, we can protect the interests of American workers and grow our economy."
