Iraq

More than 3,500 Americans have died in Iraq, with our generation suffering the largest toll. Senator John Edwards believes that every day this war goes on it is worse for Iraq, worse for our troops and worse for our country. We cannot wait. We must act today.

There is no military solution to the chaos in Iraq. Instead, the Iraqi people must solve this problem politically by taking responsibility for their country. By leaving Iraq, America will prompt the Iraqi people, regional powers, and the entire international community to find the political solution that will end the sectarian violence and create stability.

John Edwards supports the following steps:

  • Support the Troops
  • Stop the Escalation and Start Redeployment
  • End the War
  • Cap Funds to Stop the "Surge"
  • Clarify the Lack of Legal Foundation for the War
  • Withdraw Troops within Nine to Ten Months

Edwards believes stabilizing Iraq requires a major diplomatic effort to:

  • Engage in direct talks with all the nations in the region, including Iran and Syria
  • Support a political solution to the sectarian violence inside Iraq, including through convening a multi-party peace conference.

Edwards also believes the United States must intensify its efforts to train the Iraqi security forces.

Finally, Edwards believes that sufficient forces should remain in the region, working in concert with the international community, to protect against regional instability, a terrorist haven, or genocide.
